flickr

You may notice over on my sidebar I have added a flickr badge. I finally joined flickr!

You can click on any of the little photos to see them big, or go to
http://www.flickr.com/photos/purple8/

to see all my pictures. Thats about all you need to know. You need to have an account to comment on the photos, but its free to sign up and virtually painless (except the whole choosing a username - you'll notice mine is actually "k8 purple8" - because as things on the internet get older it gets harder and harder to get decent usernames). And if you sign up, we can be friends and see each other's photos :)

So far the only photos there are my favourites from our USA trip (a grand total of 30 - and at least 4 of them are of squirrels) but I will mainly be using it for my personal photos, rather than our travel photos - they'll still be on our website. And I've just tonight worked out how to get photos up on our website MUCH faster, but its late and I should be in bed, so I'll do some tomorrow.

And for those of you wondering how I managed to do all this when I already said I have a bunch of other things to do - shuddup. I have a perfectionist streak that meant once I started uploading and labelling photos, I couldn't stop til the job was done. Meh, just go see my flickr. And if you already have an account, be my friend :)

Jet Lag

This is the worst jet lag I have ever had (you know, in the whole year that I've become a seasoned traveller). We got back from the USA on Sunday morning and my body will not snap out of US time, even though we were only there for like 8 days. So my body clock is 5 hours behind London time and I've felt constantly tired since we got back.

I have a bunch of stuff to update, both here and on other websites. I need to start seriously seeking out some form of employment. Even the things I want to do aren't getting achieved. At least this morning I managed to drag my butt out of bed while it was still morning, so hopefully I will be able to fall asleep tonight while it is still tonight.

In other news, I am just now being reminded why Friends is still great viewing. Especially when its an episode you haven't seen before (and I have a few of them, because I didn't really watch it regularly past about season 4).

HP Friday 5

This is actually from a livejournal community, but since I only use livejournal for reading other people's journals, I decided to start posting them here. Every Friday, 5 questions are posted relating to Harry Potter - I hope this doesn't spoil anything for anyone... Sharon, maybe you should skip question 5 :)

1. What scene added to the movies that wasn't in the books did you most enjoy?

McGonagall teaching the Gryffindors to dance in GoF - the way the characters interacted and Neville being all keen and stuff - I thought it highlighted more of the character's personalities, which is often whats missing in the movies as they try to rush though the storyline.

2. What scene added to the movies that wasn't in the books did you most dislike?
All the bird flying around getting smacked by the whomping willow stupidness in PoA - its my favourite book and while I love Alfonso Cuaron, I hate the fact that they missed MAJOR plot points and yet included rubbish like that.

3. If you had to be trapped in a lift with one Potter character, who would you choose? Why?
Fred and/or George (surely they count as one ;)?) because they would make the time pass quickly and distract me from the fact I was trapped in a small space.

4. Which Hogwarts professor does your own personality reflect most? How so?
I AM a high school teacher and I am most like Lupin - I love the kids, like to teach through real-life learning experiences and believe every student has potential, no matter what other teachers say about them (ie, Neville and Snape). Students respond positively to this, as I think they do to Lupin.

5. What do you imagine to be Draco's fate in Book 7? Do you see him rejoining the Death Eaters, joining the Order, or something else altogether?
I think it totally depends on Snape - Draco will end up on the same side as Snape, I think... of course I'm terrible at prediction questions.

Avenue Q

Yep, its another one of those days when I post more than once :)

Once again, thanks to the connections at Graeme's work, we got £5 tickets to go to the theatre. This time, however, it was something we've actually been wanting to see for awhile - Avenue Q. Go to that website, watch the intro and then hover over the scrolling heads along the bottom to read their speech bubbles and you might get an idea of what the show is. If you're too lazy to do that, you'll have to put up with my horrible attempt at a description:

The play revolves around the people and puppets that live on Avenue Q. With songs like "It sucks to be me", "Everyone's a little bit racist" and "The internet is for porn" its like Sesame Street for grown-ups - so grown-up that they have to have a disclaimer that its not affiliated with Jim Henson or Sesame Street. Basically, it is hilarious, pokes fun at stereotypes and is really well done. The puppeteers are visible throughout and seem to merge with their puppet characters, they generally play more than one character and there is some awesome flow when both of a puppeteer's characters are on stage and they are being voiced and controlled by two different people.

We had fantastic seats, laughed a lot and had a great time. Unlike most things I seem to review though, this is definitely not one for the kids :)

One Year in London

Today marks a year since we arrived in London. Its kind of strange to think we've been here that long. I mean, a lot has happened and we have seen and done a lot of things, but a year is still a pretty long time.

And to celebrate - it snowed :) It's only the second time since we've been here that its done so - the first was a couple of weeks ago. Anyway, you know how in summer I was laughing at how they thought it was really hot and everything, like the underground, melted down when it got over 25°C? Well, it turns out that London is not designed to cope with any sort of weather... They were calling todays snowfall "severe" and warning of massive disruptions on transport and roads and stuff. Trust me, we were in Stockholm a week and a half ago and today's snow was nothing - its pretty much all gone now. But it made Graeme happy.

To mark the occasion (the one year thing, not the lame snowfall), I am finally going to start my 101 things in 1001 days list. Basically, you make a list of 101 things you want to achieve over the next 1001 days (about 2.75 years). I first learnt about this from a messageboard I am on, but if you want to find out more, the best description I've seen is here. It has taken me ages to write the list because I was being quite picky about what went on it and I wanted it to be a functional list that would actually help me achieve some of the things I want to do over the next few years. However, to prove the point that deadlines and having things in writing helps to motivate me, when I realised today's date was coming up, it made me finish the list :)

Anyway, rather than it become the only thing I write about here (and basically cheat on one of the things on my list :) ) I started a new blog just for my list and recording when and how I achieve the things on it. You can find it here. I'm still working on getting it to look how I want, but at least the list is published. I start today and my 1001 days are up on 5 November 2009.

since i love, honour and OBEY my husband...

...i am updating my blog :)

basically, graeme has decided to actually start using his blog again and so just now criticised the fact that i haven't updated since january 11. but really, i've had nothing much to say...

i've spent a ridiculous amount of time on the couch over the last few weeks, owing partly to the fact that i am unemployed, but mostly to the constant procession of colds/flus i seem to be catching - and i don't even go outside much, so g must bring them home with him from the notorious london underground or something. i just seem to get over one thing and something else flares up.

so, i've done an update...
plenty more to come this week, i think, because i do actually have some things to post/say and i do actually seem to be getting completely better. in the meantime, check out our website to see what things i have dragged myself out of the house for...
